WALL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Wall of Remembrance was erected as a final tribute to commercial farmers and their families who have been murdered in the Republic of South Africa since 31 May 1961.

THE MEANING OF THE MONUMENT

SYMBOLISM

The nine stone structures represent South Africa’s nine provinces. The names of commercial farmers murdered since 31 May 1961 are inscribed on their black granite panels.

Dolerite reflects the farmer’s bond with the harsh realities of nature and the land to which farming families devote their lives.

The three pillars represent husband, wife and child. Their horizontal links express close family ties and support through both good and difficult times.

The statue faces the future with courage. The Bible and raised arm signify agriculture’s dependence on the mercy and strength of God in sorrow and in daily life.

JOSHUA 4:6

“What mean ye by these stones?”

That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying:

A MONUMENT TO THOSE WE REMEMBER

The Wall of Remembrance at Nampo Park honours farmers, workers and family members who died in farm attacks. It was established through the commitment of the Hennenman District Agricultural Union.

Four memorial walls stand to the left and five to the right, representing every province. Each ironstone wall carries a black granite panel bearing the names of victims.
